Prof Yong Luo is mainly engaged himself in the climate change and water cycle research, including the climate change impact, risk and countermeasures, earth system model development and assessment, global energy - water cycle process and mechanism, global climate change detection, attribution and projection, land surface hydrological assimilation and climate prediction.

He is very familiar with the IPCC role and procedures. Prof Luo was the Lead Author of Chapter 9 of the Fourth Assessment Report of Working Group I of IPCC, and a member of Nobel Peace Prize-Winning IPCC Team in 2007. He participated in the expert reviews of the IPCC Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports, Technical Reports and Special Reports; And he was the Coordinate Lead Author of the Sixth Assessment Report of IPCC WGII and the Sherpa for UN Secretary General Mr Ban Ki-moon’s High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability.

Prof Luo is very active in the scientific activities, organizations and outreach. He is the vice Chair of China National Committee of IUGG/IACS, vice President of Chinese Society of Cryosphere Science, and the vice editor-in-chief of Advances in Climate Change Research and Journal of Glaciology and Geocryology.

During the past five years, Prof Luo the lead in organizing the meteorology for renewable energy in Tsinghua University, mainly focusing on the evaluation of wind and solar energy resources, the micro-site selection of wind farms, the forecast of wind and solar power generation, the ecological and climate impact of the photovoltaic power stations and wind farms, and the research and application of efficiency enhancement of wind farms.
