Chao Zhang is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, a Young Scientist at Shanghai AI Laboratory, and an Honorary Associate Professor at the Faculty of Brain Sciences, University College London. His research focuses on multimodal speech and language processing and computational cognitive neuroscience. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University in 2009 and 2012 respectively, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge in 2017. After completing his doctorate, he served as a Research Associate at Cambridge University, an AI Consultant and Co-Lead of the Speech Group at JD.com, and a Senior Research Scientist at Google. Some of his technological contributions in areas such as large audio-visual models (the SALMONN-family multimodel large language models), speech recognition (a coauthor of the HTK Toolkit), speech synthesis, recommendation systems, and stock index forecasting have seen industrial applications. Chao has published over 110 peer-reviewed conference and journal papers in venues such as ICASSP, Interspeech, ASRU/SLT, ICLR, ICML, NeurIPS, ACL, EMNLP, TASLP, and JSTSP, including six Best Paper Awards at flagship speech conferences and workshops.
